I have not blogged for a few weeks despite the fact that this is important to me. As has been “the story of my life” for the past 2 years, every passing week seems like a labyrinth filled with different layers, each with different complexities. Situations seem to be thrown at me from every direction—work, friends, school, family, love, kids, health—and most of the time, it falls on me and me alone to solve everything. Some people call me a “drifter” because I am constantly moving from one thing to the next. Although there is definitely truth in that, I tend to think of myself as more of a “juggler”. By definition, a juggler is one who is skilled in keeping several objects in motion in the air at the same time by alternately tossing and catching them. But here’s the problem: Despite the fact that sometimes I might act like a clown, I am not a circus act, nor have I ever taken a single course in juggling. I have a minimum of 4-6 pins constantly flying through the air above me, and technically, I can’t even juggle 2! So what do I do? I turn my focus inward in hopes of achieving something so simple yet so complex: Balance.
Just as I have done with several of my past blogs, I interviewed my research subjects this past week (ie: talked to my friends) and realized that I am far from alone in this. We all seem to strive to achieve balance in our lives. The only way to properly navigate the convoluted twists and turns of life without feeling so up and down that you could swear you are bipolar, is to quiet the mind and focus your attention on the present moment. Sounds easy? It’s not. Staying mindful in this fast paced world is a difficult feat… but it’s attainable.
Achieving balance through mindfulness requires hard work. Although not everybody is well-versed in meditative practices, almost everybody can start somewhere. Baby steps. A huge component is health. A fit and healthy body serves as a strong foundation for this balancing act. Eating a healthy diet composed of proper nutrients is necessary to enrich and energize both the body and the mind. A small part of this for me personally is to eat a lot of fresh ingredients like organic fruits and vegetables. Approximately every 6 months I also do a fresh vegetable and juice detox with lots of antioxidants to flush out any toxins I may be accumulating in my body and to build up my immune system (If you would like more specifics, feel free to contact me—I will always share my methods!). Another crucial component is also physical fitness. Whether it’s walking, partaking in group fitness classes like CrossFit or Orangetheory, dancing or practicing Yoga, moving your body gets your blood pumping to release those “feel good” chemicals called endorphins. And when you’re feeling healthy and happy you become a better juggler. You are mindful. You attain balance.
Is that all it takes? Heck no! There are so many more pieces to the puzzle… so many more practices that you can incorporate into your daily life to achieve mindfulness and balance. But it’s 6am and the sun will be rising soon, which means that’s all I have for you right now because there are 4 pins flying at me already, so I’ve gotta go juggle. And if you happen to drop a pin or two, don’t sweat it! It happens to all of us. Just pick them back up, stay mindful, stay focused and stay balanced. Find your own inner peace.
